Dr. Jean Rahbar, PsyaD., LMHC

Jean RahbarDr. Jean Rahbar is a Psychotherapist who provides counseling for individuals of all ages, couples, and the entire family unit. If you are looking for a deeper understanding of your own self and/or someone you care about, Dr. Rahbar is passionate about and skilled at helping clientele achieve this goal, as her clinical background is in psychoanalysis. Be sure to ask Dr. Rahbar about her funny and insightful broccoli vs. cookies metaphor to describe how exploring the unconscious in counseling works- we here at All Inclusive Mental Health luv it. Additionally, she borrows the classic psychoanalytic comparison of the human mind to an iceberg to illustrate to clientele how the thoughts and feelings which are known to the self, are the tip of the iceberg. The deeper desires and demands of the self are submerged below the water, therefore resulting in a client’s symptoms (e.g. anxiety, sleeplessness, irritability, etc.). Ultimately Dr. Rahbar’s goal is help the client to resolve their resistance “to knowing” the thoughts and feelings submerged below the water–feelings which are also directly related to their physical and emotional discomfort and/or are causing a breakdown in their communication with others.  Dr. Rahbar considers herself a psychodynamic therapist as she believes in addition to exploring how unconscious content in one’s mind effects one’s thought and actions, she strongly believes that the interpersonal relationship between client and therapist is of the utmost importance.

Additionally, this mental health professional’s background having previously worked in both ‘in-patient and out-patient’ psychiatric settings, has informed her style of counseling that is brief and goal-directed, when helpful and as when desired by the clientele that she serves. Ultimately Dr. Rahbar has an eclectic approach particularly skilled in tailoring her therapeutic style based upon the needs of the clientele. The therapeutic approaches she draws from in addition to psychoanalysis include: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Family Systems Theory, Ego Psychology, Motivational Therapy, Play Therapy, and Solution Focused Counseling.

Dr. Rahbar reports that it is not uncommon for people to report specific symptoms they are experiencing, but they are not fully sure why they have those symptoms, nor what they need to do to manage those symptoms or rid themselves of unwanted thoughts and feelings. Facilitating the process of increasing the clientele’s awareness of self and awareness in their relationships to discover both the why and the what, is Dr. Rahbar’s skill and passion. To paraphrase Freud; the goal of life is to be able to love, to play, and to work freely. Dr. Jean Rahbar states: “I experience such joy observing the process when a person enters into the phase of counseling, later realizing they have more emotional options, rather than exiting through the same old familiar door.”

Dr. Rahbar holds a Doctorate degree in Psychoanalysis and Culture, a Master’s degree in psychoanalysis, and is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor. She believes that her educational background, her experience as a therapist providing counseling having worked in a variety of settings, as well as her own personal experience being the mother of two children and as a wife, all play a role in who she is as a counseling professional.
